Burns Smashes Two Home Runs For Crusaders

Ashland, Va. (Feb. 20, 2016) – Randolph Macon College (4-0) scored 14 runs in the first six innings then held on for a 17-13 win over Alvernia University (0-1) Saturday morning in non-conference baseball action at Macon.

The Yellow Jackets put six runs on the board in the sixth to take a 14-4 lead.  Alvernia chipped away at the lead with three runs in the seventh—capped by an Ian Shaffer 2-run homer.  The Crusaders—who trailed by nine going into the final inning—made it a game with six runs in the ninth, but left the potential game-tying run on deck.

Seven different Crusaders had at least two base hits led by Chris Burns who went 4-for-6 with four runs and five RBIs.  He hit a 2-run homer in the fifth, a solo shot leading off the seventh, and a 2-run double down the leftfield line in the ninth.

Alvernia opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning.  Cameron Coons drove in the first run with a single to left center and Shaffer followed with a run-scoring single.  Macon cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the first then added three in the second—aided by two Alvernia errors—to take the lead for good.

The Crusaders committed six errors in the field leading to seven unearned runs for the Yellow Jackets..

Senior Matt Backlund took the loss giving up eight runs—four earned—on seven base hits over five innings.
