Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 9, 2016) - Thiel College scored a single run in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 win over Alvernia University Wednesday in non-conference baseball action at Lee County PDC.
Thiel opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second and took a 3-1 lead with a single run in the sixth. Alvernia got a sac fly from
Chris Burns and a run-scoring double from
Cameron Coons to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. The Crusaders had the go-ahead 90 feet away in the eighth, but couldn't get
Mike Cunningham home from third.
Thiel got a leadoff double in the ninth against Alvernia freshman reliever Nick Marotta. The runner moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Alvernia went in order in the ninth.
Coons led the way with three hits for the Crusaders while Cunningham and
James Bertolotti had two hits apiece.
Tim Carfrey went 7.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Marotta threw the final two innings and took the loss allowing one run.
The Crusaders return to action Thursday against Wisconsin Lutheran.
