Yogi Lutz surpassed 800 career wins as Alvernia University (17-11, 10-2) swept a doubleheader at Hood College (11-15, 4-8) in MAC Commonwealth baseball action Sunday afternoon.
Lutz becomes the second Division III coach this year to reach 800 career wins. RPI's Karl Steffen earned #800 in the first game of the season—a 6-4 win over Alvernia at Randolph Macon. Lutz is the eighth active coach in the division to reach the 800-win plateau and the 18th all-time to reach the mark.
Alvernia won the opener--and #800 for Lutz--9-0 with all nine runs coming in the fifth inning then finished off the sweep with a 7-1 win in game two.
In game one, the Crusaders and the Blazers played a scoreless game through the first four innings before Alvernia sent 13 batters to the plate scoring nine times with four hits and five walks.
Freshman
Thomas Malik went six innings allowing six hits with no runs and three strikeouts.
Cameron Coons went 3-for-3 at the plate and was one of four players to knock in two runs each in the fifth.
In game two, freshman
John Catchmark threw a complete game 5-hitter allowing just one run with seven strikeouts. He raised his team-leading strikeout total to 55 on the season.
Chris Burns was 3-for-3 at the plate in game two with two runs scored and an RBI. He hit his team-leading ninth home run.
James Bertolotti had two RBIs in both games.
Alvernia continues the schedule hosting Rutgers-Newakr on Tuesday.
