Cameron Coons extended his hitting streak to seven games with multi-hit games in five of them going 4-for-4 with a home run leading Alvernia University (18-11) to a 13-2 win over Rutgers-Newark (10-16) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Coons and
Joe Iacobellis both went deep for the Crusaders. It was the first career home run for Iacobellis.
Alvernia plated a pair of runs in the first inning then scored three runs in each of the next three innings for an 11-0 lead through the first four innings. The lead grew to 12-0 before Newark put up a run in the top of the sixth.
Junior
Ryan Sheekey went six innings allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts.Â
Evan Young threw two innings and
Louis Marotta closed it out with an inning of hitless relief in the ninth.
Coons doubled in both runs in the first inning, and Iacobellis hit a 2-run shot as part of the 3-run second. Coons homered to lead off the third inning and
Nathan Sides delivered a 2-run triple in the fourth.
Coons finished with two runs scored and four RBIs. Sides was 3-for-6 in the leadoff spot with a run and three RBIs.Â
James Bertolotti and Iacobellis had two hits apiece.
Alvernia returns to action Wednesday at Immaculata.
