Alvernia Powers Past Moravian, 5-4

Shaffer And Iacobellis Go Deep

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 20, 2016) - Alvernia University (22-12) hit a pair of solo home runs in a 5-4 win over Moravian College (14-18) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Ian Shaffer hit a leadoff homer in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie and Joe Iacobellis hit one in the sixth to break the 3-3 tie.  Alvernia added an insurace run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week Cameron Coons, and Antonio Baglivo earned his second save pitching around two walks in the ninth.

Tim Carfrey earned the win in relief of Ryan Sheekey who gave up two unearned runs in five innings with five strikeouts.

Alvernia opened the scoring in the second when James Bertolotti hit a sacrifice fly to score Ben Dubas.  The Crusaders doubled the lead in the third when Nathan Sides scored on an infield single of the bat of Franco Esposito.

Sheekey ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth when Moravian put together back-to-back one-out singles then loaded the bases when Charles Savi reached on an error.  Joey Maker drew a bases loaded walk then Andrew Koeni drove in a run with a fielder's choice to knot the score at 2-2.  Sheekey struck out Nicolas Ampi to strand the go-ahead run at third.

Shaffer put the Crusaders back in front on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning, and Moravian tied it with a solo homer in the sixth.

Iacobellis took a 1-1 pitch out to lead off the bottom of the sixth and put the Crusaders back up 4-3, and after a Moravian error extended the inning, Coons drove in the insurance run with a single to center.

Baglivo retired the first two batters of the ninth then walked a pair on back-to-back full counts.  He fell behind 3-1 to Cameron Leon before he roped a liner to defensive replacement Matt Briner at first to end the game.

Alvernia returns to conference schedule hosting Albright on Friday.
