Joe Iacobellis went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Alvernia University (23-12, 13-3) locked up a berth in the conference championships with an 8-2 win over Albright College (5-24, 1-15) Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Angelica Park.
Iacobellis singled and scored in the third, doubled and scored in the fifth, and singled and scored in the seventh. The Crusaders were up 5-2 after Iacobellis scored in the seventh then tacked on three runs in the eighth.
Matt Backlund went six innings allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. Backlund pitched around baserunners in every inning but the third and came up with big inning-ending double plays in the first and fifth innings.
Nathan Sides and
Ben Dubas both had 2-hit games for the Crusaders and
Dillon Dunne had a hit and a pair of RBIs.
Alvernia remains in first place in the MAC Commonwealth, a game ahead of Widener, two up on Arcadia, and three on Messiah.
Alvernia and Albright finish the 3-game series Saturday at Albright.
