Matt Backlund went seven strong innings as the Crusaders earned win 799 for head coach
Yogi Lutz with a 13-1 win over Hood College (11-13, 4-6) Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Angelica Park.
Backlund allowed one earned run on eight this with three strikeouts and turned the ball over to
Tim Carfrey who threw the final two innings allowing just a two-out single in the ninth.
Senior catcher
James Bertolotti went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs.Â
Nathan Sides,
Chris Burns, and
John Catchmark had two hits apiece for the Crusaders.
Burns opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Hood leveled the game with a run in the second.
Bertolotti doubled in a run and scored as part of a 3-run second, and the Crusaders went up 7-1 with three more runs in the third.Â
Ben Dubas and
Matt Briner doulbed in a run apiece in the third and Bertolotti drove in the third run.
Alvernia kept it going with a run in the fourth and added five runs in the sixth.Â
Mike Cunningham had a 2-run triple and Bertolotti a 2-run double in the sixth.
Alvernia and Hood had their Saturday doubleheader moved back to Sunday at noon at Hood when Coach Lutz goes for # 800.
