Lynchburg, Va. (Sept. 11, 2016) - Senior goalie
Rebecca Brosious made six of her 11 saves in the final eight minutes of play and Alvernia University ran its record to 4-0 with a 2-1 win over Lynchburg College (2-1) Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Lynchburg.
Alvernia is 4-0 for the first time to start a season since 2004. The Crusaders got a rebound goal from
Alexis Krall just over a minute into the second half and took a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute when Kristen Myer found the back of the cage on setup from
Malorie McCoy.
Trailing 2-0, the Hornets started to apply heavy pressure with just under nine minutes left to play earing back-to-back corners. Brosious recorded a save on the first corner play then three more on the second before Lynchburg was awarded a penalty stroke--which was converted to cut the Alvernia lead in half.
Alvernia took a timeout after the Lynchburg stroke and generated some pressure of its own getting a shot from
Margaret Wentzel, and earning a corner that resulted in a wide shot from
Andrea Wysocki.
Lynchburg pushed the ball back into its offensive circle and generated three more shots with one ripping wide and the other two turned away by Brosious.
The Crusaders' senior goalie recorded double digit saves for the fifth time in her career--she set a personal best with 17 in a 2-1 loss to Eastern last fall.
Alvernia hosts Eastern on Tuesday evening looking to pull within a game of the best start in school history--the '04 team started the season 6-0 on its way to a 21-4 record and runner-up finishes in both the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships.
