Reading, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2016) - Senior
Taylor Smith netted her first goal of the season in the 84th minute to give Alvernia University (2-1) a 1-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg (1-3) Saturday evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Alvernia.
Freshman Alison Hyde directed a pass down the middle of the offensive third that Smith collected with a Greensburg defender pressuring. She took a touch past the defense and buried the shot 1-on-1 with keeper.
Alvernia had a golden opportunity midway through the second half when a dangerous serve bounced around in front of the Bobcats' goal, but Greensburg keeper Shannon Edwards made one save in the flurry and the defense was able to clear the threat.
Alvernia held a 10-1 advantage in shots and had seven corners to two for Greensburg. Jess Plunkett earned the shutout without recording a save.
Alvernia continues the weekend series hosting Penn State-Altoona on Sunday at 1:00. Altoona lost 3-2 at Albright on Saturday evening. Albright will host Greensburg on Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00.
