Reading, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2016) - #20 Alvernia University (6-0) stretched its win streak to six, defeating Wilkes University (4-3) in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon on Alvernia's Turf Field.
The Crusaders notched a pair of goals per half.
Alvernia put away its first goal of the contest two minutes into play.
Erica Groves beat her defender, giving the Crusaders numbers in front of the goal. Groves placed a pass across the front of the net from the right side, finding
Andrea Wysocki on the left post for the 1-0 advantage.
Kirsten Myer ripped the game winner with just under nine minutes left in the first half, driving a shot from dead center for her second goal of the season. Â
Down 2-0 to start the second half, the Colonels cut the deficit in half in the 39
th minute.
Wysocki provided the Crusaders with insurance 13 minutes later, reestablishing a two goal margin with her second goal of the day. With a short pass feed from
Margaret Wentzel, Wysocki found the right corner of the goal on a cross shot from the left side to capture the 3-1 lead.
Alvernia tacked on its final goal six minutes later, working across the goal for the third time. Wentzel relayed the ball from the left side to
Alexis Krall at center, who deflected the pass to
Taylor Dorrin on the right post. Dorrin pushed the deflection to the left back corner for her first goal of the year.
The Crusaders outshot the Colonels 21-3 with 15 corners.
With today's win, Alvernia matches its best start in program history. The Crusaders will look to reset the record books on Wednesday, hosting Stockton University at 7:00 p.m.
