Strong First Half Lifts #19 Crusaders Over Osprey, 3-2

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2016) – #19 Alvernia University (7-0) put away a trio of goals in the first half to capture a 3-2 victory over Stockton University (6-2) Wednesday evening in non-conference field hockey action on Alvernia's Turf Field.

With the win, the Crusaders reset the record for the best start in program history, at an unbeaten 7-0. The previous record held by the 2004 team with a 6-0 run to open the season.

Senior Alexis Krall gave the Crusaders the 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute. After Stockton goalie Emily Sorochynskyj saved a Margaret Wentzel shot, Krall gathered the rebound and drove in the follow up for her fifth of the year.

The Osprey notched the equalizer four minutes later on a shot deflection.

Alvernia quickly broke the 1-1 lock as Andrea Wysocki ripped a pair of goals over the next ten minutes.  In the 22nd minute, Krall pulled past her defender on the right side, creating an opening for sharp pass across the net. Wysocki was ready on the left side, driving the feed to the back of the net.

Wysocki struck again in the 30th minute, this time off the set up by Wentzel. Wentzel pushed a shot from the left side, which Wysocki deflected to the right side of the net, just over the shoulder of Stockton's Sorochynskyj, to put Alvernia ahead 3-1.

Stockton came within one in the 58th minute as Brooke Hunt snuck in her first goal of the season, but the Crusaders controlled the rest of the game offensively to hold the 3-2 margin.

Alvernia outshot the Osprey 20-5 with an 18-3 corner advantage.

Rebecca Brosious earned her seventh win in goal with three saves.

The Crusaders return to play again on Saturday, hosting Arcadia in their MAC Commonwealth conference opener. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
