Reading, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2016) - Widener University (6-6, 2-1) took a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (6-10, 1-2) Tuesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball match.
The Pride jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set only to see the Crusaders storm back to close the gap to 13-10. Widener put an end to the Alvernia run getting a kill from Natalie Winn then pushed its lead back to 20-11 on the way to a 25-16 win.
Alvernia battled back with a win in the second set to level the match. Widener held a 23-20 lead late in the set. Alvernia sophomore
Laura Wachowicz pounded down a kill to make it 23-21 then served four straighit points to finish off a 25-23 win for the Crusaders in the second set.
Widener grabbed control of the third set with a run midway through then held on for a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match, and ran off a 25-14 win in the fourth and deciding set.
Emily Smith led the Crusaders with 14 kills and Wachowicz had a team high 18 digs.
Abby O'Donnell finished with 35 assists.
Alvernia continues the season at home hosting Susquehanna on Thursday.
