Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) - Alvernia University (2-0) collected its second non-conference victory with a 4-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy (1-1) Saturday afternoon in field hockey action at Gwynedd Mercy.

Margaret Wentzel powered the Crusaders offense, notching a pair of goals and an assist.
Wentzel gave Alvernia the 1-0 lead heading into halftime, gathering the set up by
Kirsten Myer on a corner opportunity with just under four minutes to go and notching her second of the year.
Alvernia extended its lead in the 19-minute mark in the second half, pulling ahead 2-0 as
Malorie McCoy recorded her first goal of the season. With a 2-on-1 opportunity, McCoy ripped a shot from center that deflected off the pads of Griffin goalie Samantha Soscia and into the cage.
Gwynedd Mercy cut the Crusaders margin in half with just under eight minutes to play, but Alvernia responded less than a minute later to reestablish its 2-goal advantage.
Julianna Hall netted her first of the year off a Wentzel pass to hold a 3-1 lead.
Wentzel tacked on the final goal of the day with four minutes left. Capitalizing on a breakaway, Wentzel collected her own rebound off a shot attempt and put away the followup to seal the 4-1 victory.
With her pair of goals, Wentzel ties Megan Novogratz ('06) for second on the career goals list with 76.
Rebecca Brosious earned the win in goal with eight saves.
Alvernia continues its road stint on Wednesday, traveling to Misericordia for a 3:30 non-conference matchup.
