Reading, Pa. (Jan. 14, 2017) - Stevenson University (9-6, 5-2) scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to build a 20-point lead on the way to a 60-41 win over Alvernia University (1-15, 1-6) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
The Crusaders, who faced a deficit as large at 14 points in the first half, had the gap down to eight points, 40-32, at the end of the third quarter after
Liv Andrefski knocked down a jumper on the last possession of the quarter.
Alvernia suffered through five straight turnovers to start the fourth quarter while Stevenson started the quarter 6-for-8 from the floor to build the 52-32 lead.
Stevenson jumped out to a 19-7 lead, and held the same advantage, 21-9, at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter lead hit 14 points early, but Alvernia responded with a 10-1 run to cut the gap down to five points, 24-19. Â Andrefski hit a 3 to start the run for the Crusaders and
Torie Zerbe kept it going with back-to-back buckets. Â A pair of free throws from
Abbie Zerbe had the deficit at seven points, but Stevenson scored five straight points to close the quarter and take a 33-21 lead at the break.
The Crusaders outscored the Mustangs 11-7 in the third quarter to cut to eight points, but Stevenson took control with the early run in the fourth.
Alvernia returns to action Wednesday at cross-town rival Albright College.
