Miranda Hoover nearly doubled her career-high scoring 32 points to lead Alvernia University (2-17, 2-8) to a 79-75 win over Hood College (6-13, 1-9) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
Hoover was 15-for-22 from the floor and made a pair of free throws. She bettered her previous career high of 18 points by halftime scoring 19 points in the opening 20 minutes helping the Crusaders to a 44-33 lead at the break.
Hoover's 32-point effort was only the third 30-point game for a women's basketball player at Alvernia in the last eight years and the most since Alex Velazquez scored 32 twice in the 2008-09 season. Hoover also matched the program record for made field goals in a game, which was set in the 1990-91 season by Nicole Brown.
Alvernia built it's 11-point halftime lead up to 21 points, 56-35, with 5:06 left in the third quarter, but Hood closed the gap back to 13 points by the end of the third and eventually tied the game at 71-all with just over two minutes left to play.
Alvernia got a crucial 3-point play from
Kiersten Ingram with 39 seconds left and made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 23 seconds to close out the win.
Ingram also established a new career high with 17 points, and
Maya Cooper went 10-for-12 from the free throw line on her way to a dozen while dishing out a career-high 11 assists. Hood put three players in double figures led by 27 from Dajah Gee.
Alvernia has its second bye of the conference schedule this Saturday then hosts Lycoming College next Wednesday.
