Kristen Sipling broke the school record for kills in a 5-set match with 35 to lead Alvernia University (14-10) to a 3-2 win over Wesley College (14-11) Tuesday evening in non-conference women's volleyball at Wesley.
Sipling found the floor on the last swing of the night giving Alvernia the 16-14 win in the fifth and deciding set. Â She broke her own record for kills in a 5-set match (26) which she had shared with Alvernia Hall of Famer Kindra Lewis.
The teams alternated set wins on Tuesday with Wesley opening up a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win in the first set. Â Alvernia answered with a 25-19 win in the second and a 25-16 win in the fourth set to force the winner-take-all fifth.
Alvernia battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth and held a 14-11 lead, but a pair of kills from the Wolverines and an attack error tied the set at 14-all. Â
Jillian Baker gave the Golden Wolves another shot at match point with a kill and Sipling closed it out.
Junior setter
Abby O'Donnell tied the record for assists in a 5-set match with 58. Â
Emily Smith had a team-high 27 digs and
Aubrey Gruwell-Keating and Sipling had 26 digs each.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule at Stevenson on Saturday.
