Chester, Pa (Oct. 21, 2017) - Widener University (10-5, 3-3) scored two goals in the final eight minutes of play to capture a to a 2-1 win over Alvernia University (5-10-1, 2-5) during MAC Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Widener.
The Pride held an advantage in the shot column for the entire game, finishing with 27 shots to Alvernia's six.
Widener also held Alvernia to zero shots on goal for over 70 minutes. The Golden Wolves first, and only, shot on goal came in the 71st minute and resulted in an Alvernia goal.
Taylor Gough sent in a well delivered corner to
Maria Petrongolo. Petrongolo was position off the far post and headed the ball into goal.
Alvernia held a 1-0 lead for over ten minutes until the Pride answered.
In the 83rd minute, Widener's Lexi Slusher sent a cross in from the right side of the box. Lauren WIlson redirected the cross past
Jessica Plunkett, tieing the game a 1-1 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.
Widener broke the tie just over four minutes later. In the 87th minute of play, Widener's Lauren Wilson sent a rocket shot in from 25 yards to put the Pride up 2-1.
Widener would hold the lead for the remaining three minutes to collect the win.
Plunkett finished the game with a season high 11 saves.
With the loss, Alvernia falls to seventh place in the MAC Commonwealth Conference standings.
The Golden Wolves complete their conference and regular season schedule when they host Stevenson on Tuesday.
