Metuge Esong scored a goal and assist during a three goal second half to lead Alvernia University (9-8-1, 4-4) to a 3-0 win over Stevenson University (3-11-2, 2-5) during MAC Commonwealth Conference action at Alvernia.
Despite getting off nine shots on goal in the first half, Alvernia was unable to get on the board. The Golden Wolves entered the half tied with the Mustangs at 0-0.
Alvernia broke the 0-0 tie early 60th minute of play. Esong sent a cross in front of the net. The pass looked to be headed towards
Gabe Hochenberger, who was positioned off the left post. However, the ball never made it to Hochenberger, and was instead deflected into goal by a Stevenson defender, putting Alvernia up 1-0.
The Golden Wolves would hold the 1-0 lead for nearly 22 minutes.
In the 83rd minute of play. Esong sent a pass in from the far right side of the field.
Gabe Sensenig made a diving effort to beat a defender and head the ball into net from just off the left post.
Just over two minutes later, Esong added an insurance goal for the Golden Wolves to give them a 3-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in play.
Raine Slovak sent the ball into Esong, who was charging in off the left side. Esong gained control of the ball and fired in a shot. The shot deflected off of the hand of Stevenson's keeper and into goal.
Alvernia's defense held the Mustangs to just four shots, only one of which was on goal.

Zach Rider earned his eighth shutout on the season, and 27th of his career in net for the Golden Wolves.
With tonight's win, the Golden Wolves clinched a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Playoffs. They will either be the fourth or fifth. Alvernia's seed, opponent, and the location of the game will be determined on Saturday when Arcadia and Lebanon Valley finish out their MAC Commonwealth Conference schedules.
Alvernia finishes out its regular season on Saturday when they travel to Marywood to take on the Pacers.
