#4 Arcadia Finds Late Game-Winner In 2-1 Decision

Esong Nets Alvernia Goal

Glenside, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2017) - Fourth-seeded Arcadia University (12-4-2) broke a tie late in regulation for a 2-1 win over #5 Alvernia University (10-9-1) Monday evening in the play-in game of the MAC Commonwealth Men's Soccer Championships at Arcadia.

The Knights scored the opener in the 34th minute when Ryan Hammer freed himself along the right end line and hit a cross to Bradley McKim who buried a header inside the far post.  Alvernia tied the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute when senior Metuge Esong stole a ball in the box and hit a curling shot into the side netting.

Both teams generated plenty of offensive chances in the second half with Arcadia netting the game-winner with under eight minutes left in regulation.  Duncan O'Conner worked his way along the left side of the box and found Harun Abdullahi who knocked it home.

Alvernia gave a furious effort down the stretch and looked to have the equalizer in the 85th minute, but the play was whistled offsides.  Freshman Raine Slovak hit a stinging left footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box that Arcadia keeper Chris Watson knocked down.  A scrum of Alvernia players knocked the ball into the net, but the linesman indicated they were off.

Watson finished with four saves for Arcadia and Alvernia senior Zach Rider stopped seven shots for the Golden Wolves.

Arcadia advances to face top-seeded Messiah College in a semifinal on Wednesday.  Alvernia will await a possible bid into the ECAC Championships to be announced next Monday.
