Shillington, Pa (Oct. 4, 2017) - Alvernia freshman
Morgan Mondschein scored four goals to lead Alvernia University (5-6) to a 5-4 win over reigning King's College, the 2016 MAC Freedom Field Hockey Champions, during non-conference field hockey action at Governor Mifflin's Multi-Purpose Field.
Taylor Dorrin put Alvernia up 1-0 in the 11th minute of play.
Andrea Wysocki sent a corner to
Taylor Dorrin who fired one into net.
Alvernia extended its lead in the 26th minute when
Andrea Zimmerman took an initial shot that went wide.
Morgan Mondschein redirected Zimmerman's shot into goal, putting the Golden Wolves up 2-0.
King's started to chip away at Alvernia's lead early in the 33rd minute of play when Sarah Zbierski connected with Brianna Dimaggio to cut Alvernia's led to just one goal.
Three minutes into the second half, Dimaggio scored again to tie the game up at 2-2.
Early in the 50th minute of play, King's took a 3-2 when Maryrose Mauro rocketed a shot past Alvernia goalkeeper
Emma Beamesderfer.
Two minutes later, Alvernia answered when Mondschein scored her second goal of the game off of an assist from
Taylor Dorrin.
Less than two minutes after that, Dorrin and Mondschein connected again. Dorrin sent a pass over to Mondschein, who was at the opposite end of the circle, who turned and scored.
In the 59th minute of play, Mondschein and Dorrin connected for the third time. Like the second time, Dorrin sent a pass from the right side of the circle over to Mondschein, who was on the left side of the circle. Mondschein was nearly undefended and fired a hard shot into goal, scoring her fourth goal of the night and putting Alvernia up 5-3.
With just over a minute remaining, King's got one back on the Golden Wolves. King's Kelsey Gabrielle sent in a corner to Dimaggio. Dimaggio sent the ball back to Gabrielle, who turned and scored off the left post.
King's took the ball back down into the Alvernia zone, but Alvernia was able to clear the ball and take the 5-4 win.
Prior to tonight,
Morgan Mondschein had yet to score a collegiate goal. With her four goals tonight, Mondschein is now second on the team in goals scored this season. She trails
Andrea Wysocki by one.
With three assists,
Taylor Dorrin tied her single game career high for assists. In October of 2016 Dorrin had three assists in a 7-2 win against Marywood.
The Golden Wolves return to action on Saturday when they travel to Arcadia for a MAC Commonwealth Conference game.
