Taylor Dorrin converted a penalty stroke following an untimed corner at the end of regulation to give Alvernia University (7-6) a 1-0 win over Marywood University (3-9) Monday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Marywood.
Alvernia held a 15-6 advantage in shots during regulation, but couldn't beat Marywood keeper Kerri Mountz who made six saves through 70 minutes.
In it's final push, Alvernia earned a corner with 15 seconds left in regulation. Â The play continued until the guests were eventually awarded a penalty stroke. Â Dorrin took the attempt--the second of the season for the Golden Wolves and fourth in Dorrin's career--and beat Mountz for the win.
Marywood had four shots in the opening 19 minutes of play with Alvernia's
Emma Beamesderfer stopping the only one that made it through to the keeper. Â After another save from Beamesderfer in the 29th minute, the Pacers managed just one more shot over the final 40 minutes.
Alvernia started to apply pressure in the final five minutes of the first half with Mountz making three saves and the Pacer defense coming up with another save to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Alvernia kept the pressure up in the second half forcing another defensive save in the 47th minute and hitting the post a minute later.
The Golden Wolves earned two penalty corners with under eight minutes to go in regulation, but couldn't find the net then had one more in the final seconds before the penalty stroke.
???????Alvernia travels to Eastern University on Wednesday for another match-up with a former PAC rival then returns to the conference schedule on Saturday hosting Albright for homecoming.
