Alvernia University Earns Third ECAC Field Hockey Title

Senior Malorie McCoy Named Tournament MVP

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa (Nov. 12, 2017) - Alvernia University scored two second half goals to defeat FDU-Florham, 2-0, and capture its third Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Field Hockey title during the championship game at Alvernia on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Malorie McCoy, the tournament MVP, broke the 0-0 tie early in the second half, and senior Hailey Knowlton added an insurance goal to lead the Golden Wolves to their third title in five years.

Alvernia had seven shot opportunities in the first half, but the Golden Wolves were unable to convert any goals. Alvernia's defense held the Devils to just three shots in the first half, none of which were on goal.

Just four minutes into the second half, McCoy broke open the scoring and put the Golden Wolves up 1-0. Sophomore Andrea Zimmerman knocked down the ball and tapped it over to McCoy, who was positioned at the top of the circle. McCoy turned and fired a shot past the FDU-Florham keeper and into the right side of the goal.

Six minutes later, Knowlton added to the Golden Wolves lead. Junior Taylor Dorrin sent a pass in from the right side of the circle. Knowlton, who was positioned right in front of the goal, received the pass and fired a quick shot into the left side of the goal, putting the Golden Wolves up 2-0 with 22 minutes remaining in the game.

FDU-Florham was able to get off a few shot attempts, but the Alvernia defense, behind goalie Emma Beamesderfer, held strong to secure the 2-0 shutout victory.

Sophomore Erica Groves, junior Taylor Dorrin, senior Malorie McCoy, senior Hailey Knowlton, and sophomore Emma Beamesderfer were all named to the All-Tournament team, with McCoy earning MVP honors.

McCoy finished the tournament with two goals. Dorrin notched a goal and two assists, and Knowlton finished with one goal. Groves was a strong defensive presence throughout the tournament, helping to clear the ball on numerous occasions when the opponent pressed in. Keeper Emma Beamesderfer had four saves and led the Golden Wolves to two shutout victories in the tournament.

This is the third ECAC title Alvernia has captured in the program's history. Alvernia won its first title in 2013, and captured its second title in 2015. All three titles have been under the leadership of head coach, Laura Gingrich.
