Ursinus Tops Alvernia, 55-50, In Season Opener

Andrefski Scores 21 To Lead Alvernia

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 15, 2017) - Ursinus College (1-0) scored 18 of the final 25 points of the game to take a 55-50 win over Alvernia University (0-1) Wednesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

Alvernia held Ursinus to just four points in the third quarter then opened the fourth with an 8-2 run for a 43-37 lead with 6:18 to play.  Ursinus cut that in half with a 3 from Rachel Guy then went 5-for-8 from the floor over the final five and a half minutes to close out the win.

Liv Andrefski poured in 21 points to lead the Golden Wolves and Torie Zerbe grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

???????Ursinus took an 18-8 lead after the first quarter.  Alvernia cut the deficit to seven points at the half, then tied the game at 35-all after three thanks to an 11-4 edge in the third quarter.

"I thought we did some really good things.  I was encouraged by our ability to fight back," said Alvernia head coach Sheila Cook after the game.  "The third quarter defensively we were able to lock them up."

Half of the Ursinus points in the fourth quarter came on an inbounds play to Sydney Fail with 18 seconds left in the quarter.  That bucket gave the Bears a 35-33 lead.  Alvernia sophomore Abbie Zerbe then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, and freshman Dej'hanee McNeal tipped the miss back to Abbie Zerbe who knocked down a jumper to tie the score.

???????Alvernia finished the night with just seven buckets in each half and was 14-for-53 (26 pct) on the night.

"Offensively we need to to a better job putting points on the board," said Cook.  "It's frustrating to not be able to walk away from a comeback like that with a win.  Some of that comes with maturity."

???????Alvernia started two sophomores and a freshmen, and brought three more first-year players off the bench.

The Golden Wolves continue the season at the DeSales Tournament this weekend.
