Lancaster, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2017) - Calil Moultrie and Nick Youngkin registered career highs and Alvernia University (2-0) held off a late comeback effort in a 72-62 win over Lancaster Bible College (1-1) Friday evening in the first game of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall.
Alvernia held a 14-point lead with 2:30 left to go and saw the Chargers put together a furious comeback. Â The gap was trimmed to six points, 68-62, with 1:10 to play thanks to three turnovers from the Golden Wolves, and LBC had a 3-pointer in the air that would have made it a one-possession game. Â The ball came up short, and Alex Shippen ripped down the rebound.
Moultrie was fouled in the backcourt and hit four free throws in the last 60 seconds for the final margin.
Moultrie finished with a game and career high 26 points. Â Youngkin was 8-for-12 from the floor including 4-for-6 from the arc to set his career high at 21.
Alvernia had a 7 lead early and had the first half lead up to eight points, 21-13. Â LBC put together a 12-3 run to take a 25-24 lead. Â Moultrie hit a 3 to give the lead back to the Wolves who led 32-27 at the break.
LBC tied the score three times early in the second half, the last at 39-all with 14:06 to play.
A Youngkin 3 closed a 9-0 run for Alvernia, and a 3-point play from Moultrie gave the Wolves a 56-44 lead with 8:21 to go.
The lead grew to as many as 16 points and a pair of Moultrie free throws had Alvernia up 66-52 before the final LBC run.
Shippen also reached double figures for the Wolves with 11.
Alvernia advances to the tournament championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and will face the winner of Friday night's game between Bethany (W.Va.) and F&M.
