Reading, Pa. (Nov. 29, 2017) - Hood College (2-4, 1-0) scored the final 11 points of the game in a 68-65 win over Alvernia University (2-3, 0-1) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball at Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia senior Mike Miller hit a deep 3 with 5:42 to go that gave the Golden Wolves a 65-57 lead. Â Hood answered with a 3 on the next possession and Alvernia went cold from the floor missing the final 10 shots with a pair of turnovers as the Blazers mounted the comeback.
Hood got a bucket on the block from Daniel Wegener with two minutes left to close to within three points then went to Wegener again on the next two possessions with similar results. Â His bucket with 34 seconds left gave Hood a 66-65 lead then Alvernia turned the ball over on the inbounds and Hood scored again for a 68-65 lead.
Alvernia had one final look at a 3 to tie, but Alex Shippen's look from deep at the elbow was off the mark.
Wegener hit 7-of-8 shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 21 points. Â Nick Youngkin and Anthony Hedgepeth led Alvernia with 18 points each.
Alvernia had an early eight point lead and built the first-half lead to as many as 10 points, 26-16.
Hood cut the deficit down to four points and Alvernia settled for a five point lead at halftime, 33-28.
Hood tied the game three times in the second half, but couldn't take the lead until Wegener's bucket with under a minute to play.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule Saturday at Lebanon Valley. Â The Golden Wolves had the top two teams in the preseason poll in the next week. Â At the Dutchmen on Saturday--picked second by the coaches--and against Lycoming--picked first--on Wednesday.
