Reading, Pa. (Dec. 16, 2017) - Gwynedd-Mercy University (5-3) scored 17 points in both the third and fourth quarters en route to a 58-39 win over Alvernia University (3-7) Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
The Griffins hit a 3 on the final possession of the first half that left the host Golden Wolves up one at the break, 25-24.
GMU opened the third with a 3 to take the lead and built it to 11 points, 41-30, on a 3 with 2:09 left in the third. Â The Griffins were 7-for-25 from the arc on the day.
Alvernia had the lead down to six points, 43-37, on a 3 from sophomore Abbie Zerbe with 7:19 to play, but GMU answered with 11 straight points to take a commanding lead, 54-37. Â Alvernia went 0-for-5 from the floor during the run.
Alvernia built an early 15-10 lead in the first quarter and held a 15-12 after the first 10 minutes. GMU tied the score at 17-all midway through the second quarter, but Alvernia responded with a 7-0 run to go up 24-17 with 1:44 left before the half.
Alvernia junior Maya Cooper drew a foul with six seconds left and hit the first of two free throws for a 25-21 lead. Â GMU grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball ahead to Bianca Adams who knocked down a 3 to pull within one.
Liv Andrefski led the Golden Wolves with nine points. Â Adams led the Griffins with 15.
Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday hosting Penn State-Harrisburg at 5:00 p.m.
