Reading, Pa. (Mar. 2, 2017) - Three different players scored three goals apiece for Alvernia University (1-1) in a 14-12 win over Susquehanna University (1-2) Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
And three was the magic number for Alvernia, which scored the last three goals of the game, to deny the River Hawks a comeback victory.
Alvernia came out on fire scoring six of the first seven goals of the game and holding a 6-1 lead with just over 14 minutes left in the first half.
The lead remained five for the hosts when
Abby McCarthy scored 10 seconds before halftime for a 10-5 Alvernia lead.  Susquehanna was able to threaten in the end of the half earning a free position shot with one second left, but the shot bounced wide.
The River Hawks opened the second half with four straight goals to pull within one at 10-9, but Alvernia was able to momentarily stem the tide when
Bridget Reynolds scored with 14:04 left for an 11-9 score.
Susquehanna answered that and scored two more to take a 12-11 lead with 7:30 left to play.
Alvernia got the equalizer just over three minutes later when
Alyson Keene scored her third of the game with 3:59 to go. Â
Brooke Campione, who scored the first two goals of the game for Alvernia, picked a great time for her third goal giving Alvernia a 13-12 lead with 2:18 to play, and
Tequila Donnelly offered some insurance with just over a minute to go.
Campione, Keene, and
Abby McCarthy all scored three goals for Alvernia.
Samantha Rothman played 42 minutes and made 11 saves for Alvernia which continues the non-conference schedule against Neumann at home on Saturday.
