Falcons Top Crusaders In Conference Opener

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 25, 2017) - Alvernia University came up short in a comeback in game two, falling 4-0 and 4-2 to Messiah College in a MAC Commonwealth softball double-header Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.

In the opener, the Falcons posted a pair of runs in the third and the seventh to put up a four spot against the Crusaders.

Alvernia threatened to score in the top of the first as JoAnnah Lim opened the contest with a double to center, however it was unable to convert the run.

The Crusaders had another opportunity in the sixth with a one-out double by Samantha Petry, but again fell short.

Riley Shields suffered the loss on the mound in game one, allowing six hits in three innings of work.

In the nightcap, Alvernia plated runs in the fifth and the sixth to cut a 4-0 deficit in half.

Trailing 4-0, Brianna DePriest led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to give the Crusaders its first run of the day.

An inning later, Alvernia put together a string of one-out singles by Alex Maher, Morgan Psiuk and DePriest to load the bases. Lim then delivered a sac fly to left to plate Maher to cut Messiah's margin to 4-2.

The Crusaders notched ten hits in game two with multiple-hit games from Emily Carmella, Sarah Bystrycki, Maher and DePriest.

Alvernia will have a quick turn-around, traveling to Lebanon Valley College tomorrow for another MAC Commonwealth double-header starting at 1:00 pm.
