Reading, Pa. (Mar. 29, 2017) - Alvernia University (5-3, 1-0) captured a 13-8 win over Widener University (3-5, 0-1) in its women's lacrosse MAC Commonwealth conference opener Wednesday afternoon on Alvernia's Turf Field.
Trailing 3-0 six minutes into the contest, the Crusaders responded with a trio of goals, including a pair from
Abby McCarthy.
The Pride recaptured the lead with 14 minutes until half, but back-to-back goals by
Alyson Keene and McCarthy gave Alvernia its first lead of the day, 5-4.
Widener put away two shots in the 13th minute to go ahead 6-5, and an exchange of goals kept Alvernia within one at halftime.
The Crusaders turned the tide in the second half, outscoring the Pride 7-1. In the final 20 minutes,
Bridget Reynolds,
Brooke Campione and Keene each notched two scores a piece.
Leading the way offensively for Alvernia were Keene and McCarthy with four goals each.
Brooke Campione tacked on three goals of her own, reaching her 100th collegiate tally. Campione becomes the 12th player in Alvernia program history to reach 100 career goals.
Kallie Taylor and
Samantha Rothman split the game in the net for the Crusaders as Rothman gathered the win with six saves.
Alvernia will have a week off before continuing its conference schedule on April 5th, traveling to Messiah College for a 4:00 start.
