Langhorne, Pa. (Apr. 1, 2017) - Alvernia University (10-16, 1-11) dropped a 3-0 match to Marymount University and a 3-2 decision to Cairn University Saturday afternoon in a Continental Volleyball Conference Tri-Match at Cairn.
Freshman
Spencer Matthews recorded team-high 29 kills over two matches.
Dalton Hartman had 54 assists and
Austin Rush collected 20 digs.
In the opener, Marymount used an 11-6 advantage midway through the first set to guide it to a 25-14 win. It put together runs of five and four straight points in the second set on its way to 25-18 win, and wrapped up the contest with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Justin Gibbs picked up 11 assists while
Ralph Lunati had 9 kills.
In the second matchup, Cairn won the first and third sets for a 2-1 advantage, but Alvernia pushed past an 8-7 deficit in the fourth with a six point run to put the match out of reach and force a fifth set.
The two sides exchanged leads to eight points in the final set when the Highlanders combined a trio of kills with a pair of Crusader service errors to pull ahead 13-8. Cairn gathered its final pair of points on two Alvernia miscues.
Matthews and Hartman both had season-high performances as Matthews had 21 kills and Hartman delivered 45 assists.
Alvernia continues CVC action on Tuesday, hosting Stevenson University at 7:00 pm.
