Annville, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2017) - Senior first baseman
Cameron Coons homered in the seventh and the ninth helping #16/18 Alvernia University (17-2-1, 8-1) to a 7-6 win over Lebanon Valley College (10-9, 4-5) Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at LVC.
The game was a back and forth affair with Coons hitting a 2-run shot to center in the top of the seventh and hammering an 0-2 pitch out to right for a 3-run shot in the ninth.
LVC got a run off Alvernia starter
Dillon Dunne in the bottom of the first, but Alvernia took its first lead with two runs in the top of the third. Â
Ben Dubas drove in both runs in a 2-out single to score
Kyle Gaynor and
Nathan Sides.
LVC tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third then took a 4-2 lead in the sixth scoring plating a pair on a bases loaded single off freshman reliever
Jarrad Graver. Â
Antonio Baglivo took the ball from Graver with one out and runners on the corners and got out of the threat with a 6-4-3 double play.
Coons kept the momentum swinging for Alvernia in the next half inning with just his second home run of the season to tie the game at 4-4.
LVC took the lead back in the eight when Zach Edwards doubled in a run, but Coons--who finished the day 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs--stepped up in a big spot again in the top of the ninth.  Dubas singled to center on a 1-2 pitch to put two runners on and Coons cleared the bases launching his third home run of the season to right.
Zack Landy took over for Baglivo in the ninth and after hitting the leadoff batter, gave up an RBI double with one out. Â The potential tying run moved up to third on a ground out, but Landy nailed down the save on a pop up to second.
Alvernia will face non-conference foe Haverford on Wednesday before a huge conference series with Widener next weekend.  Alvernia will host the single game on Friday with the doubleheader on Saturday in Chester.
