Reading, Pa. (Apr. 24, 2017) - Alvernia University put together three runs in the second inning en route to a 4-3 victory over Widener University Tuesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Angelica Park.
The single game matchup was a restarted game that occurred as a result of game two of Wednesday's double-header being halted due to darkness.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the second,
Mckenzie Miessau opened the frame with a single to left and moved up a bag on the sacrifice by
Morgan Psiuk.
Emily Carmella drove in Miessau to tie things up, and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double by Analise Fouracre.Â
A Widener miscue off the bat of
Brianna DePriest allowed Fouracre to score, putting the Crusaders up 3-1.
Alvernia tacked on an insurance run, which would later serve as the game winner, in the fourth as Carmella and DePriest picked up bookend walks around singles by
Taylor Thomas and Fouracre.
The Pride used a double with the bases loaded in the fifth to cut its deficit 4-3, but the Crusaders worked out of the jam with a pair of run-downs to maintain the one-run advantage.Â
Widener threatened to plate the equalizer in the sixth on a two-out base knock up the middle, but Psiuk's throw to home was right on target, preserving Alvernia's lead.Â
The Crusaders were led offensively by Fouracre, who was 2-for-3 on the day.
Brittany Brown collected the complete game win in the circle, scattering six hits in seven innings of work with four strikeouts.
Alvernia has a quick turn-around, taking on Ursinus College tomorrow in a non-conference double-header set for 3:00 pm.
