Alvernia Takes Pair of One-Run Wins from PSU

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 27, 2017) - Alvernia University took a pair of one-run wins from Penn State Harrisburg Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Angelica Park.

In the opener, Penn State capitalized on a Crusaders error to take a 1-0 lead in the first.

Alvernia pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second as Analise Fouracre delivered a single to right center to plate Emily Carmella and Mckenzie Miessau.

The Lions crossed the equalizer in the top of the third, again making the most of a pair of Alvernia miscues.

Penn State went up 3-2 in the sixth on another Crusader error, but Alvernia recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the frame.

Carmella came around to score for the second time of the day on a PSU error after starting off the inning with a double. Alvernia plated the game winner when Brianna Fisher, who pinch ran for Miessau who reached on the error, scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Amanda Turner.

Brittany Brown picked up the win in the circle, throwing two innings with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore Kayla Andrews collected the start, scattering four hits in five innings of work.

In game two, Alvernia pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh to capture the walk-off win.

Trailing 4-2, Morgan Psiuk started the frame with an infield single. Sarah Bystrycki put the tying run on base with a single up the middle, and a deep fly ball by Turner advanced the duo into scoring position.

Taylor Thomas then delivered a two-RBI single to knot the game 4-4.

With one out, pinch runner Bernadette Carey advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Riley Shields, and moved up to third on a Taylor Malinish single to short.

With runners on the corners, Malinish drew the throw from PSU catcher Jessica Roelli, allowing Carey to score for the 5-4 victory.

The Crusaders cut Penn State's 2-0 lead in half in the fifth as Brianna DePriest scored on a throwing error by the Lions.

PSU responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to pull ahead 4-1 before Alvernia plated its second run of the game on an RBI single by Fisher, scoring Riley Shields who led off the innings with a double to left.

Shields collected the win in the circle with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Fisher earned the start, throwing four complete innings with one walk and 3 Ks. Samantha Petry also threw an inning in relief.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Hood College for its final regular season contest.
