#11/12 Alvernia Earns Series Win Over Widener With DH Split

Dunne Throws Complete Game Shutout

Chester, Pa. (Apr. 8, 2017) - Junior Dillon Dunne threw a complete game shutout in game two and senior Cameron Coons drove in three runs on the day as #11/12 Alvernia University (20-3-1, 10-2) split a doubleheader to win a 3-game series over Widener University (18-7, 9-3) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Widener.

The Crusaders took Friday's opener 6-3 in Reading to start the series.  Widener scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth in the first game on Saturday for a 5-2 come-from-behind win, then Dunne went the distance allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in the rubber game.

Coons drove in both runs in game one and doubled in Nathan Sides in the first inning of game two.  Kyle Gaynor scored on a passed ball for the only other run in game two.

The series win gives Alvernia the tiebreaker advantage over Widener should the two teams end up tied at the end of the regular season.

Widener had a runner reach second base in the second inning of game two, but only had two other baserunners in the game and neither advanced past first base.  Dunne set the Pride down in order in four of the seven innings including each of the last two.

Sides walked and scored on a Coons sacrifice fly in the first inning of game one and Coons drove in Mike Cirilli with a sac fly in the fifth for a 2-1 lead.  Widener had a batter reach on an error in the bottom of the sixth then followed with four straight hits to take a 5-2 lead.

Alvernia continues the season Sunday hosting Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m.
