Bethlehem, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2017) - Alvernia University (1-0) overcame a 2-1 deficit in the match with an 18-16 win in the fifth set for a 3-2 win over Moravian College (0-1) Friday afternoon in non-conference women's volleyball action at Moravian.
The Greyhounds needed extra points for wins in the first and third sets to take the 2-1 lead. Â The hosts won the opener 26-24 and the third set 27-25. Â Alvernia took the second set by a 25-23 score.
The fourth set--which Alvernia won 25-20--was the first one decided by more than two points. Â Alvernia put together a run scoring five of six points to break an 11-all tie and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way forcing the winner-take-all final set.
The Golden Wolves kept the momentum going by jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the fifth set, but after a timeout the Greyhounds came storming back with eight straight points for a 12-11 lead. Â The set was tied at 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 before Alvernia scored back-to-back points for the win. Â
Abby O'Donnell made it match point with an ace and an attack error from Moravian was the final point.
Senior
Kristen Sipling set a record for kills in a 5-set match with 32 breaking a mark she previously shared with Alvernia Hall of Famer Kindra Lewis. Â
Emily Smith and
Laura Wachowicz also reached double figures in kills with 16 and 13 respectively. Â O'Donnell finished with a match-high 62 assists.
The win is the first for any varsity team at Alvernia since the university changed its mascot to the Golden Wolves over the summer.
In the second match of the evening, Baldwin Wallace opened with a 25-11 win in the first set then ran off a 25-17 win in the second, and closed the match with a 25-21 win in the third. Â Sipling led the way with 11 kills for the Golden Wolves and
Aubrey Gruwell-Keating had a team best 11 digs.
Alvernia returns to the Greyhound Premiere Tournament on Saturday to face York College and Bard College.
