Reading, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2017) - Five different players scored a goal apiece and sophomore
Claire Brier dished out three assists as Alvernia University (2-2-1) defeated Caltech University (0-4) by a 5-2 final Wednesday evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring early with
Lauren Gough converting Brier's first assists of the day just 27 seconds after the opening whistle. Â Madison Harris made it 2-0 in the 7th minute on an unassisted goal, and Brier set up
Maria Petrongolo two minutes later for the early 3-0 lead.
The lead hit four goals as Brier assisted
Annie Rose in the 15th minute and the Golden Wolves made wholesale substitutions after that.
The teams played even for the rest of the opening half with Alvernia enjoying a 4-0 lead at the break. Â Senior goalie Jess Plunkett made four of her five saves on the night in the first half.
Caltech struck for a goal two minutes into the second half when Krystin Brown weaved her way through the defense and found the back of the net.
Alvernia answered in the 54th minute when
Johnna Shank stole a pass in the offensive third and fired a ball over the Beavers' keeper for her first of the season.
Caltech scored with 14 minutes left for the 5-2 final.
Alvernia continues the season Saturday at DeSales University.
