Wilkes-Barre, Pa (Sept. 16, 2017) - Alvernia University (2-4) sophomore
Erica Groves scored two goals and had one assist, to lead the Golden Wolves to a 4-1 win over Wilkes University (2-4) in non-conference field hockey action at Wilkes.
Freshman
Maria Panettieri got things started offensively for the Golden Wolves. Panettieri deflected a pass from
Regan Downey into goal to put the Golden Wolves on board in the 11th minute of action.
Eleven minutes later, the Colonels matched the Golden Wolves when Haley Gayoski sent one past Alvernia keeper
Emma Beamesderfer in the 22nd minute.
Alvernia regained the lead in 29th minute when
Erica Groves sent in a corner pass to
Kelsey Stewart. Stewart converted a shot from the top left of the circle to put the Golden Wolves up 2-1.
Alvernia began to pull away in the second half. Early in the 48th minute, Madison Pothoff took a shot that was saved by Wilkes keeper Dallas Kendra. After a scramble in the circle for the rebound, Groves was able to fire a shot past Kendra, putting Alvernia up 3-1.
Alvernia added one more insurance goal one minute later when Stewart sent a pass to Groves, who was off the left post. Groves was able to send off a shot and score her second goal of the day.
Beamesderfer, behind the Alvernia defense, held off several corner and shot attempts in the last ten minutes of play. Beamesderfer finished the day with seven saves for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia returns to action on Monday evening when they travel to New Jersey to face Stockton University.
