Kristen Sipling, the national leader in kills, hammered down 22 kills to lead Alvernia University (8-5, 2-1) to a 3-1 win over Hood College (1-12, 0-3) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
The opening set was a series of mini runs before Hood put together three straight points for a 22-17 lead. Â Alvernia cut it to 23-20, but Hood scored back to back points to take the first set 25-20.
The guests opened the second set scoring the first two points and found themselves up 12-10 before Alvernia took control scoring nine of the next 10 points for a 19-13 lead. Â Sipling started the run with a kill and added another midway through. Â The Blazers couldn't put together a successful run and the Golden Wolves leveled the match with a 25-19 win.
Alvernia used another big run on
Emily Smith's service rotation in the third set to pull ahead 17-9 before closing out a 25-17 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The hosts kept the foot on the gas scoring the first 10 points of the fourth set on the way to a 25-11 win.
Abby O'Donnell finished the night with 26 assists and three different players,
Laura Wachowicz,
Aubrey Gruwell-Keating, and Smith finished with a team-high 15 digs.
Alvernia returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Bryn Mawr and Gwynedd-Mercy for a tri-match.
