Chester, Pa (Sept. 26, 2017) - After dropping the a close first set, Alvernia University (11-5, 3-1) took the final three sets in route to a 3-1 win over Widener University (6-10, 1-2) during MAC Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball action at Widener University.
Alvernia was up 7-4 in the first set before Widener went on a seven point run. Alvernia called a timeout and scored a point coming out of the break to end the Pride's run. The Golden Wolves came back and tied the set up at 22-22 with an
Abby O'Donnell service ace, but the Pride were able to hold on for 25-23 first set win.
The Golden Wolves were down early in the second set before they were able to take a 10-9 lead over the Pride on their way to a 25-18 second set win.
Alvernia never trailed the rest of the match, taking the third and fourth sets with decisive 25-20, and 25-19 wins.
Senior
Kristen Sipling, who is second in the nation in kills, led the Golden Wolves with 26 kills.
Aubrey Gruwell-Keating led the team with 13 digs, and
Abby O'Donnell had 44 assists on the night.
Tonight's win is Alvernia's first win over Widener in the history of the program, and with 11 wins in September, including three conference wins, the Golden Wolves are off to their best start since joining the MAC Commonwealth Conference in 2010. Alvernia currently sits tied for second in the MAC Commonwealth Conference alongside Lebanon Valley and Arcadia. Both teams trail a 2-0 Stevenson.
Alvernia returns to action on Thursday night when they host Penn State Berks. Alvernia returns to conference action on Wednesday when they host Arcadia.
