Nick Sincavage scored his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute and senior
Zach Rider made seven saves to lead Alvernia University (1-2) to a 1-0 win over Rutgers-Camden (1-2) Tuesday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.
The game was delayed for over an hour by heavy rain and lightning then 14 minutes into play was delayed another 55 minutes by lightning.
Sincavage come into the game as a substitute in the 29th minute and scored two and a half minutes later on a pass from
Metuge Esong. Esong hit a thru ball from beyond the top of the box that found its way through a Camden defender to Sincavage. The junior midfielder pulled the ball back to open space for a left footed strike and found the corner netting for a 1-0 lead.
Rider made five of his seven saves in the first half to keep the Golden Wolves ahead at the break.
Alvernia had three good scoring opportunities midway through the second half, but a shot from
Ryan Kuster was blocked, one from
Adam Orndorff was just wide of the far post, and
Cody Hart was turned away by Camden keeper, James Brett.
Rutgers-Camden had its best chance in the 82nd minute when Skyler Diggs was sent in on a 1-on-1 with Rider, but the Alvernia keeper snuffed out the play to keep the sheet clean.
Rider earned his 20th career shutout and is one behind career leader Ben Diller (2009-12). Alvernia notched just its second win over the Scarlet Knights in 12 chances and the first since a 2-1 win in September of '06.
Alvernia returns to action Saturday for a night game at Penn State-Berks.
