Abby O'Donnell dished out 39 assists--including the 1,000th of her career--and Alvernia University (3-2, 1-0) defeated Lycoming College (2-1, 0-1) by a 3-0 final Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action at the Physical Education Center.
O'Donnell becomes the fourth player in Alvernia history to reach the 1,000 assist milestone as the Golden Wolves opened the conference schedule with a win.
Alvernia opened up a 15-10 lead in the first set only to see Lycoming fight back to pull within a point at 17-16. Â O'Donnell set up
Laura Wachowicz to stop the run and the Golden Wolves finished off a 25-19 win in the opener.
The second set was even tighter with Lycoming again surging back after falling behind. Â The Warriors held a 22-21 lead before Alvernia was able to run off three straight points to get to set point. Â Lycoming got the ball back on a service error, but O'Donnell set up
Emily Smith for a kill and a 25-23 win in the second set.
Lycoming had its run early in the third set going up 5-1 and 8-3. Â Alvernia fought back for a 12-10 lead. Â The Golden Wolves pounded down three straight kills late in the set for a 24-22 lead and Smith ended the match with an ace.
Kirsten Sipling continued to dominate the offense finishing with 18 kills. Â
Aubrey Gruwell-Keating had eight digs to lead the defensive efforts.
Alvernia is back in action this weekend at the McDaniel Quad Match.
