Frederick, Md. (Jan. 24, 2018) - Nick Youngkin scored a career-high 30 points and Alvernia University (9-10, 4-6) shot 50 percent from the 3-point line in an 84-64 win over Hood College (7-12, 3-7) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at BB&T Arena.
Youngkin had a great night shooting going 5-for-8 in each half including four made 3s in each half. Â He scored 14 points before the break and helped Alvernia to a 45-34 lead at the break.
Hood's Evan Wang hit a 3 that cut Alvernia's lead down to six points, 53-47, but the Golden Wolves beat the press for a dunk from freshman Kyle Gordon and moments later Youngkin knocked down back-to-back 3s to cap a 10-0 run.
Alvernia committed a handful of turnovers in the first half against the Hood pressure, but fell into a rhythm moving the ball against ¾-court pressure and a half court zone assisting on 24 of its first 27 buckets.  The last one a setup from senior Alex Shippen to classmate Mike Miller for a 3 that gave the guests a 77-60 lead with 3:42 to play.
Miller joined Youngkin in double figures with 16 and Calil Moultrie added a dozen. Â Shippen finished with nine points and seven assists.
Hood had a pair of players reach double figures led by 16 from Anthony Pearson.
Alvernia picks up a big conference win to stay connected to the top half of the league in the race for the postseason.
The Golden Wolves have the bye in the league schedule on Saturday and hit the road for a test at Lycoming on Wednesday.
