Frederick, Md. (Jan. 24, 2018) - Hood College (6-13, 2-8) held off a late charge from Alvernia University (4-15, 0-10) for a 47-39 win Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at Hood.
Alvernia fell behind by 14 points midway through the third quarter, but put together a huge run to cut the gap down to one point, 35-34, with 4:25 left in the game.
Alvernia had a chance to take the lead on the next possession, but missed in the paint and Hood scored on the other end to spark a run of 12-5 to close out the game.
Alvernia struggled to find the range in the first half shooting just 4-for-24 from the floor, but held Hood to 7-of-34 shooting over the first 20 minutes and trailed by only eight points, 18-10, at the halftime break.
Hood was able to push the lead to 14 points, 26-12, three minutes into the third quarter, but then Alvernia finally started to knock down shots. Â Abbie Zerbe and Maya Cooper both hit 3s during a 10-2 run that pulled the Golden Wolves within six points, 28-22.
The lead was down to three points at the end of the third quarter, and a jumper from Julia Ewen with 4:25 left pulled Alvernia to within 35-34.
Cooper led Alvernia with 15 points and Torrie Zerbie finished with seven points and 13 rebounds.
Alvernia has the bye in the league on Saturday then returns to action Wednesday at Lycoming.
