Reading, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2018) - Alvernia University (7-7, 2-2) fell to #2 Messiah College (13-0, 4-0) in the second overtime period as the Falcons earned a 2-1 victory in MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey action on Friday night at Alvernia to kick off the athletics events of Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Alvernia lit the board in the 16th minute on a diving goal from
Morgan Mondschein. Mondschein stole the ball from a Falcons the 40 yard line and dribble through multiple defenders. Mondschein then fired a diving shot off the right post past the keeper and into net to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves would hold their lead for the remainder of the first half.
The Falcons came out firing in the second half, evening the game up at 1-1 in the 36th minute.
Alvernia was held to just one shot on goal in the second half, and Alvernia's
Emma Beamesderfer made multiple saves to force the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Alvernia's
Erica Groves had the best look between both teams. Groves fired a hard shot towards goal with four minutes remaining in the first overtime, but the ball sailed just outside the left post.
The Falcons had a shot on goal in the final minute, but, again, Beamesderfer made the save to to force the second overtime period.
In the first minute of the second overtime, Messiah gained position of the ball on the opposite end line. The Falcons took the ball the length of the field and had a two one opportunity as they approached the net. Messiah's Kezia Loht, who was off the right post, made a quick pass inside to Kristen Levesque. Levesque fired just over Beamesderfer's right pad and into goal to give Messiah the 2-1 double overtime victory.
Beamesderfer finished the night with 15 saves.
The Golden Wolves continue their conference schedule on Wednesday with a short road trip to crosstown rival Albright College.
