Reading, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2018) - Widener University (6-5-1, 4-1) scored three unanswered goals in a 4-1 win over Alvernia University (3-10-2, 1-4) Tuesday evening in MAC Commonwealth women's soccer action at Alvernia.
The Pride broke a 1-1 tie in the 69th minute when Brielle Errico scored her second goal of the game. Â She freed up some space just inside the penalty box in the left side and lifted a shot into the far side netting for a 2-1 lead.
Widener added insurance in the 72nd minute and closed the scoring with just under five minutes left.
Both goalies finished with three saves. Â Widener had an 11-8 lead in shots.
Alvernia had a few long crosses intercepted by the Widener goalie in the early going and both teams had dangerous free kicks just after the 12th minute. Â Alvernia junior
Taylor Gough had a direct kick from 40 yards out make it through to Delaney Sabath who made an unchallenged save and Shea Scannell took one for the Pride from 25 yards out that narrowly missed the top corner.
Widener's Emily Eisele had a decent chance from the top corner of the box in the 28th minute, but her low, skipping shot was easily handled by Alvernia freshman
Lily Sankey.
With just under 10 minutes left in the opening half Widener mounted a dangerous counter that ended with Errico ripping a shot wide of the left post from 15 yards out.
Widener had the the first good chance in the second half to break the scoreless tie, but Errico missed the near post from in tight in the 48th minute.
The Pride broke through five minutes later when Errico carried the ball into the box, got past the Alvernia defense and tucked a shot inside the post.
It didn't take the Alvernia offense long to answer. Â The Golden Wolves earned a corner kick in the 58th minute and
Johnna Shank got a head on the kick from Gough to score the equalizer.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule at Stevenson on Friday.
