Cody Hart buried a rebound five minutes into the second overtime to give Alvernia University (6-9-2, 2-3) a 2-1 win over Widener University (6-8-1, 1-4) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves had a corner kick served in from
Austin Young. Â The ball bounced around before coming free to
Adam Orndorff who blasted a shot to the far post that Widener keeper John Warwick stretched to deny. Â The rebound came to Hart on the right side and he cracked it into the back.
Luca Grippi finished the day with five saves for the Golden Wolves.
Widener scored the first goal of the game in the 24th minute. Â Peter O'Connor hit the right post with a cross that caromed to Kevin McKenna who finished into the open net.
Alvernia was able to answer eight minutes later on an indirect free kick inside the top of the box. Â
Ryan Kuster tapped the restart to Young who blasted it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Alvernia had a pair of golden chances to break the 1-1 tie early in the second half. Â Young hit a shot that was square into the keeper's chest and Ethan Laverdure had a one-timer from point blank range that was saved.
Play continued to swing back and forth through the second half.
Nick Tait had a great chance to break the tie in the 82nd minute, but his one-touch shot curled over the crossbar.
Jay Ringer had a shot go just above the crossbar midway through the first overtime.
Alvernia breaks out of a four-way tie for sixth place and continues the conference schedule on Saturday at Stevenson.
