Reading, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2018) - Alvernia University (10-7, 5-2) needed just one goal to take a 1-0 win over Arcadia University (12-5, 5-2) in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action on Wednesday night at Alvernia.
With the win, Alvernia secured the #2 seed in the MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey Championship. The semifinal game will be a rematch of tonight's game, with the Golden Wolves hosting the third seeded Arcadia Knights on Wednesday, October 31st at 7:00 PM.
With eight penalty corners and 12 shots, the Golden Wolves dominated ball control in the first half, but were unable to score on the Knights.
The 0-0 tie lasted for just under 57 minutes when
Andrea Zimmerman broke the tie.
Kelsey Stewart sent an initial quick pass up to
Morgan Mondschein, who sent the ball into Zimmerman. Zimmerman quickly gathered the ball off the left post and fired into the opposite corner to put Alvernia up 1-0.
The Knights pulled their goalie and put an extra attacked on the field in the final two minutes. They were able to get one shot off, but the attempt was blocked and cleared by
Maria Panettieri as Alverina held on for the 1-0 win.
Emma Beamesderfer played all 70 minutes for the Golden Wolves and made four saves on the Knight.
The Golden Wolves close out their regular season on Saturday with a home game against Cabrini University before hosting the Knights next week.
