Lancaster, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2018) - Stevens Technical Institute (2-1) jumped out to an early 10-point lead and held off several runs in an 88-79 win over Alvernia University (2-2) Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall.
The Ducks scored the first nine points of the game and held a 12-2 lead with four minutes gone by. Â The lead hit 12 points later in the half before Alvernia made its first run with 10 straight points fueled by a 3 and a jumper from junior Nick Youngkin.
Stevens still led by two, 26-24, before a mini run gave the Ducks a 31-24 lead. Â They settled or a 43-35 lead at the halftime break.
Stevens' Jayson Winick had a game-high 15 points in the first half going 6-for-6 from the floor including a pair of 3-pointers. Â Youngkin had a team-high 12 for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia had the gap down to five points early in the second half, but Stevens responded with eight of the next 10 and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Justin Thomas scored 15 points in the second half for Alvernia and finished with a game-high 23. Â Winick finished with a team-best 22 points. Youngkin scored 17 and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Â
Keon Taylor scored 14 points and
Malik Green added 10.
Alvernia is off for Thanksgiving week and will host Juniata College next Sunday.
