Keon Taylor scored a team-high 23 points and freshman
Malik Green posted a double-double in his collegiate debut to lead Alvernia University (1-0) to a 77-59 victory over Penn State Berks (0-2) in the 2018-19 season opener.
The Lions and Golden Wolves went back and forth early on and were tied at 28-28 with six minutes to go in the first before Alvernia went on a 17-7 run to close out the half and take a 45-35 lead into the break.
Alvernia extended its lead to 15 with a three from
Rob Young Jr. and a jumper from just outside the pain from Green in the first minute of the second half.
The Lions went on a six minute run to come within seven before Alvernia began to pull away again with a dunk from Green with just over six minutes to play.
Alvernia held the Lions scoreless in the final three minutes to take the 77-59 to start off the season with a win.
Taylor led Alvernia with 23 points and three rebounds. Green finished the night with 19 points and ten rebounds and
Nicholas Youngkin collected 10 rebounds.
Alvernia has a quick turnaround and will face Penn College of Technology on Saturday at home at 3:00 PM.
