Golden Wolves Come Up Short Against The Pride, 71-61

DeVito Posts Career-High 24 Points

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2018) - Widener University (7-1, 1-1) went on a 10-0 run to open up the third quarter and pull ahead for its largest lead of the game en route to a 71-61 win over Alvernia University (3-4, 0-2) in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.

Alvernia took a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter with Gabriella DeVito knocking down a three to give Alvernia the four point advantage early on, but the Pride answered with a three of their own to cut Golden Wolves advantage to just one.

The Golden Wolves would retake the lead with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter off a Torie Zerbe jumper. The Pride bounced back and retook the lead two minutes later. Widener would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

Alvernia kept it close, with Widener holding just a four point advantage heading into the half, but Alvernia's struggled to find it's rhythm coming out of the break. The Pride held the Golden Wolves scoreless in the opening five minutes of the third quarter, allowing Widener to gain a 14 point advantage.

Kiersten Ingram made a layup with 4:45 left in the third quarter to end Alvernia's scoring drought. The Golden Wolves then went on a seven point run of their own over the next two minutes to cut Widener's lead to five with 3:00 minutes remaining the the third quarter.

Alvernia then went cold to finish out the third quarter, with only one point coming off a DeVito free throw, and Widener took advantage to extend its lead back to 13.

Alvernia outscored the Pride 26-23 in the final ten minutes, but Widener's lead would be too much to overcome.
DeVito led the Golden Wolves with a career-high 24 points, including seven 3-point shots. Torie Zerbe led Alvernia's rebounding efforts with 13 boards. Zerbe also led the team with four steals.

Widener had three players reach double digits, with Devan Rimmer leading the way with 23 points.
